Personal details. Cuban, year of birth 1949, male.
Qualifications. Graduate degree: Licenciatura (Biological Sciences), 1972, Havana University; appointed Auxiliar Professor and PhD (Biological Sciences), Havana University, 1984; long and broad experience in systematic mycology and the infrastructure of that science.
Current position. Deputy Director and Scientific Director, Jardín Botánico Nacional, Havana, Cuba. Cuban Co-ordinator for the Darwin Initiative project Biodiversity Conservation in Cuba, joint Cuban Co-ordinator for the British Council project Electronic Distribution Maps of Caribbean Fungi; Member of the Revista Iberoamericana de Micología Supervisory Committee for Latin America; Secretary of the Revista del Jardín Botánico Nacional de Cuba Editorial Board; Member of the International Mycological Association (IMA) Executive Committee.
Expertise. Mycology, identification of ascomycetes (mainly leaf-inhabiting fungi); teaching Plant Pathology in the Universidad Central de Las Villas, Cuba (1973-1974); working in the National Botanical Garden of Cuba and teaching Mycology in Faculty of Biology (1974-2002); technical adviser in 5 theses of Biology students of Havana University and 2 theses of Master in Science; considerable experience of data-entry for computerized biological recording. Scientific member in the following projects: Fungi of the Caribbean (Darwin Initiative, 1997-2000); Fungal Diversity of the Sierra del Rosario Biosphere Reserve, Cuba; A Web-site for Cuban mycology, with electronic distribution maps of Caribbean Fungi (British Council, 2000-2003); Darwin Initiative Biodiversity Conservation in Cuba (2001-2004); Fungal Diversity in Ecological Reserve "Alturas de Banao", Escambray, Cuba (2002-2004)
Active participation in many different scientific events with more than 20 international and national congresses, including the Third, Fourth, Fifth & Sixth Mexican Mycological Congresses, the Fifth Latin-American Botanical Congress (La Habana, 1990), the Second Spanish National Mycological Congress (Congreso Nacional de Micología en España), and the First, Second, Third and Fourth Latin-American Mycological Congresses (La Habana, 1993; La Habana, 1996; Caracas, 1999; Xalapa, 2002); Symposium of Tropical Mycology (Liverpool, 2000) and the 7th International Mycological Congress (Oslo, 2002). Keynote speaker in Santiago de Compostela, Spain (1994) and Xalapa (2002). Many publications (over 25 in Cuba, Germany, Mexico, Spain and the UK).

Previous achievements. Founder member of Latin-American Association of Mycology (ALM) and President during two periods (1990-1993, 1993-1996); played key role in establishing this Association; President of the Organizing Committee of two Latin-American Congresses of Mycology (1993 and 1996); Cuban Representative for the Latin-American Association of Mycology (ALM) since 1996; participant and member of the Organizing Committee of two National Exhibition of Fungi (1991 and 1993) in the National Botanical Garden (Cuba). Joint Cuban Co-ordinator for the Darwin Initiative project Fungi of the Caribbean.
