The study of Ephemeroptera began in Ukraine over 120 years ago. The group has not, however, received specialist attention within Ukraine during the past 60 years. Some publications (Majewski, 1865; Dziedzielewicz, 1890; Mikulski, 1936; Chernova, 1938) contain valuable information on Ephemeroptera, and a total of 59 species of are known from waters in Ukraine (28 of these from the Carpathians alone). Ten species should be acknowledged in Ukraine. In the Ukrainian Carpathians (the Dniester basin), 4 species of Heptageniidae new for Ukraine were recorded. The central-European species Ecdyonurus dispar (Curtis) and Ecdyonurus torrentis Kimmins were found in the rivers Lykhobora, Opir, Rozhanka, Mizunka, Svicha and in the Stryi and Dniester between the settlements of Staryi Sambir and Zhuravno. These species seemed to have been found previously by other collectors, but they were identified as Ecdyonurus venosus (Fabricius). Ecdyonurus venosus was divided into three separate species, Ecdyonurus venosus, Ecdyonurus dispar and Ecdyonurus torrentis by D. Kimmins in 1942 (Landa, 1969), while Ecdyonurus submontanus Landa was described by V. Landa (Landa, 1969). There is not a lot of information about its ecology and distribution. Its range probably coincides with a range of Ecdyonurus venosus. Larvae of Ecdyonurus submontanus have been found to be associated with the fast-flow section of the Mizunka river and an altitude of 316-780 m. The genus Electrogena is new for Ukraine. Electrogena affinis (Eaton) and Electrogena lateralis (Curtis) were previously included in Heptagenia. In 1985 A. Zurverra & I. Tomka used distinctions of gloss and paragloss of larvae and penis characters of the imago to separate Electrogena and erecte a new genus (Studemann et al., 1992). Electrogena quadrilineata (Landa) was recorded for the first time in Ukraine in the upper flow of the Dniester. Larvae were found in a slow-flow section. The systematics of Ephemeroptera have changed considerably in recent publications and there is a need for a fundamental revision of the species in Ukraine.
