Natural regions along political borders are often characterized by a rich and well protected landscape, flora and fauna. The creation of networks of international reserves is a now a topical issue worldwide, promoted by international organizations for nature conservation. It is particularly important for Europe where there are many countries rather small in area. International reserves enable national reserves to be joined in a wider network, and form a basis for the comparative investigation of biodiversity, and for joint research by scientists from different countries. The establishment of international reserves is particularly significant for Ukraine which has borders with seven other states. Some of Ukraines natural regions are continuous with natural regions beyond its borders, for example Polissia and the Carpathians. The first international reserve in Ukraine was established in the eastern Carpathians. Stuzhytsia parcel (total area 146 square km) was included in a trilateral international preserved area, the "Eastern Carpathians" biosphere reserve. The project "Conservation of biodiversity in the Ukrainian delta of the Danube river", funded by the International bank is now complete, and this region will become part of the Ukrainian-Rumanian biosphere reserve. The establishment of further international preserved areas is planned on the border with Poland (based on the Roztochia Reserve and Shatskyi National Park), and Belarus (based on the regional landscape park Prypiat'-Stokhid). The formation of a network of international reserves on the border between Ukraine and Russia in all three of the region's vegetational zones (forest, forest-steppe, and steppe) is also important. Research in the areas adjacent to that border is particularly needed in the steppe zone. The presence of a network of international reserves is important evidence that Ukraine is developing in a stable fashion, and the network is becoming increasingly significant for landscape and biodiversity conservation in Ukraine.
